Helen MacPherson doesn't know where she would be without her companion, friend and most of all her eyes, Egan.
Egan is her six-year-old black Lab, a seeing eye dog she received from the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides. MacPherson and
Egan were on hand to greet walkers and their four-legged friends who took part in the Purina Walk for Dog Guides this morning at J.C.
Saddington Park in Port Credit.
More than 100 people turned out to help raise funds for the annual event held in communities across Canada.
Seven Mississauga Lions Clubs organized the local walk which raises funds to help cover the $25,000 cost of training a dog guide to
assist people with various disabilities including blindness.
A long-time a Mississauga resident and member of the Erin Mills Lions Club, MacPherson, said Egan does everything her eyes can't. She
was blind when she was born, but over the years it has declined to a point she has difficulty and sees less than even shadows. Egan is
her first dog guide.
"He helps me cross the street, he goes to the grocery store, restaurants, concerts, schools…anywhere I go, Egan goes," she said. "He's
extremely bright. If I don't know a store I go into, and I get lost, I just say 'Egan, main door and he gets me there.'"
Bright sun helped the walkers stay warm on their brisk walk along the lake and dogs seemed to enjoy the cooler temperatures. Mostly
pets, the dogs were happily trotting along on a family outing, while raising much-needed funds at the same time.
A few participants were foster families who raise the pups until they are one year old. Then, they are sent to Canada Dog Guides schools
for intensive training that helps them prepare for their new owner's disability.
For Denise Parkes, owner of Fur Babies Dog Grooming, a business with locations in Mississauga and Brampton, it was her first time
participating and she made sure the dogs in her group were decked out in their Sunday best. Mainly white poodles with cotton-candy
pink accessories and coloured fur, her pooches were nonchalant about all the to-do.
"I think it's a great event," she said. "Everyone's happy, the dogs are having a great time."
Walkers enjoyed hot dogs and beverages following their stroll.
Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides is a national organization in its 25th year that trains dog guides to assist Canadians with various
disabilities. Since 1985, fundraising walks have raised more than $5 million in support of the dog guide training programs.
